Day 5: Restaurant Review

Review of The Mixx
by Kyle

Taste the burst of the succulent, rich flavors of The Mixx's sandwiches, soups, and salads. Find yourself at ease with the bright and vivid environment as you chow down on your juicy meal.

Step into the restaurant and be greeted with vibrant tables and chairs, where customers are dining happily. With the many windows, a lot of light comes into the restaurant, which brought me back to the day when my family and I sat on our porch eating sandwiches. However, make sure you come before the lunch rush, or else you will be stuck in an everlasting line to get your salads or soups.

If you enjoy a burst of flavors all at once with every bite, try the Country Club sandwich. It is packed with delicious, juicy meats and fresh lettuce. Any time of the year, no matter if the weather is cold or hot, this sandwich will always leave you happy and with a full stomach.

As you're chowing down on your meal, enjoy the pop music coming out of speakers in the ceiling. Compared to Jimmy John's, there may not be as much quantity in The Mixx's sandwich options, but there is still quality to make up for it.

I would give this restaurant 4.5 out of 5 stars. Their service was great, and the price wasn't too expensive.

Day 4: KCUR

Teacher’s note: On Thursday, students listened to podcasts and discussed the attributes that make professional podcasts successful. Then they created their own podcasts, focusing on a topic meaningful to them. Students practiced monitoring their volume, pitch, and speed to optimize their vocal deliveries. Here is Kyle's podcast:

Later that day, students toured KCUR studios in Kansas City. As their kind and knowledgeable host, Donna Vestal—director of content strategy—provided background information on public radio introduced the students to KCUR announcer Linda Sher.

Director of Community Engagement Ron Jones then had each student record a promo for the popular KCUR program Up To Date. You can hear Kyle's promo below.

Day 3: KCPT

Teacher's Note: On Wednesday, students took a tour of the KCPT studios in Kansas City, learning what distinguishes public television from its commercial counterpart. With those differences in mind, each student wrote and directed a public service announcement. Here is Kyle's.

Day 2: KU School of Journalism

MEDIA MANIA VISITS KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

LAWRENCE, Kan. — On the morning of Tuesday, June 7, seven Media Mania campers and Mr. Guldin went on a tour of the KU School of Journalism in Lawrence, Kan. Students toured the Stauffer-Flint building to learn about journalism and media.

After a short walk to the Stauffer-Flint building, students were greeted by Ms. Vicky Reyes at the entrance, and she took them to the presentation room. KU Academic Advisor Ashley Gomez was there and began the presentation. She explained the broadcast room, what students do there, and what their jobs involve.

Once the presentation was over, Mrs. Gomez allowed questions and answered them all. The campers found out that though she does not actually have a background in journalism, Mrs. Gomez has been at KU since 2007. Students also learned that Ms. Reyes is learning how to do the presentation and the tour herself.

Shortly after the presentation, Mrs. Gomez led students on the tour through the Stauffer-Flint building. As they walked, she would tell them about the important rooms and would lead them into each one to show them what goes on. Unfortunately, classes started that day, so some of the rooms were locked.

Mrs. Gomez also showed the campers the broadcast studio and a newspaper about basketball that the college journalists produced.

After the tour ended, camper Jude stated, "It was a great experience to have to learn about journalism."

Camper Luke added, "Last year was better because we were able to do a lot more stuff like the green screen and seeing the computer technology, but this year was still amazing."

Day 1: The Jungle Book Movie Review

A Review of The Jungle Book
by Kyle W.

In The Jungle Book, produced by Walt Disney Pictures, a boy named Mowgli (Neel Sethi) lives among the animals in the jungle. Mowgli was found in a cave by Bagheera (Ben Kingsley), who brought him to the wolf pack. Among the wolf pack, there was an alpha named Akela (Giancarlo Esposito). Raksha (Lupita Nyong'o), also part of the wolf pack, raises Mowgli.

Trouble strikes when the jungle has a drought and Shere Khan (Idris Elba), the tiger, arrives at the place where all the animals and Mowgli have gathered to drink the little amount of water in peace. Shere Khan smells Mowgli and will do anything to kill him after the peace treaty.

Later on, Mowgli leaves with Bagheera and starts heading toward the man village. Shere Khan, in wait, jumps out and attacks the . Shere Khan fails to kill Mowgli and goes to the wolf pack. He then kills Akela to draw Mowgli back into the jungle. On his way to the man village, he is attacked by Kaa (Scarlett Johanson), a snake who tries to kill him. Luckily, he is saved by Baloo (Bill Murray).

Monkeys then kidnap Mowgli, and Baloo and Bagheera chase after him. The monkeys take him to King Louie (Christopher Walken), a huge ape, but he is rescued by Baloo and Bagheera and they start heading back to fight Shere Khan.

This movie would be great for all ages and families. The director, Jon Favreau, did a great job with all the characters and personalities. The characters brought humor at the right time but also intensity too. Compared to the old Jungle Book animation, this one is a lot better with the images and quality. I also think the theme was great: don't be who you aren't. However, I would have added some bigger words for the older audience instead of only using a few.  A-
